August 12, 2021

On August 12, 2021, I woke up wanting to photograph strangers. And, I wasn’t sure how it would happen.

But then, my iCal reminded me of a Brooklyn-based networking event I recently “liked” via Eventbrite that catered to professional men, so on a whim, I got on my laptop to research TGF, the group hosting the event.

After perusing the group’s Instagram and website, I phoned the number that Google listed for the organization. The founder greeted me on that call, and we chatted for about half an hour.

I asked if women could attend the event, and he said yes. I then asked if I could stop by the event to photograph pro bono. (I’m aware this is a faux pas in the eyes of some professional photographers.) He approved, and we made plans to briefly meet before the event started.

I arrived in Brooklyn about an hour before my meeting, so I grabbed a light meal at Kulushkat and took street shots from my seat because, why not?

Post-meal, I walked over to the event site where I mingled with the host and guests, whom I photographed for several hours.

For the most part, I met dope folks at this event. And, I was proud of myself for leaving my borough. (I’m a Harlemite who can’t remember the last time I traveled outside of Manhattan.) Lastly, I was also proud of myself for following through on a thought to photograph strangers.

Fortitude & Gratitude,

Y.
